BRADFORD City have made a bold move by appointing former Manchester United midfielder and Manchester City manager Mark Hughes as their new boss.

Although the 58-year-old has been out of work since being sacked by Southampton in December 2018, it is a huge coup for the Bantams with Hughes having never previously managed outside of the Premier League.

Hughes, who won two titles with United, has previously managed Blackburn, Manchester City, Fulham, QPR and Stoke as well as Wales, has signed a deal at Valley Parade until the summer of 2024.

He replaces Derek Adams, who was sacked last week ahead of their visit to Boundary Park, where Latics extended their unbeaten run with a 2-0 win.

"I am really pleased to be here and am looking forward to the role, and the job in hand. It has been an exciting few days," said Hughes.

"It is maybe a little bit of a surprise that I have come in but do not be put off by that.

"I am here for a reason, to make Bradford City a team people want to come and watch - and are proud to watch.

"The supporters come in their numbers and that is the thing I have missed since being out of management. I am looking forward to the matchday, getting that adrenaline flowing and interacting with the crowd."

Hughes is set to take his first session tomorrow and will be in the Valley Parade dug-out against Mansfield this weekend.

His appointment comes the day after Carlisle United announced Paul Simpson would be returning to take charge of the club until the end of the season.

Cumbrian Simpson, who led the Blues to back-to-back promotions in 2005 and 2006, has rejoined Carlisle following departure of manager Keith Millen and director of football David Holdsworth in what is seen as a last-ditch attempt to save the Brunton Park club from relegation.

Carlisle, who replaced Latics in the bottom two on Saturday following defeat at Swindon Town, are the visitors to Boundary Park a week on Saturday in a relegation six-pointer.
