GOALKEEPER Jayson Leutwiler has become Latics' fifth - and final - signing of the night.

The 32-year-old has penned a two-year deal following last season's spell at Huddersfield Town.

The former Blackburn Rovers stopper joined the Terriers in February 2021 after impressing whilst on trial at the Championship club, having previously spent a brief spell training with Latics last season.

Keith Curle has been on the hunt for a goalkeeper since last season, when he had to end the campaign with emergency loan signing Laurie Walker from MK Dons, following a season-ending injury to Doncaster Rovers loanee Ian Lawlor.

“He’s certainly a presence in the goal and we needed to recruit well in that position as a priority," said the Latics head coach.

"His CV shows that he’s played a lot higher but also knows League Two well and comes in with a fantastic attitude to make the number one shirt his.

“After meeting Jayson and speaking at length we knew it’d be a good match and we’re really excited to see what he can bring to the team on and off the pitch because he’s another experienced professional in our ranks that will prove invaluable.”

Leutwiler began his career with Basel in his native Switzerland before moving to England, joining Middlesbrough, in 2012.

But it was at Shrewsbury where he established himself, making 118 league appearances, which earned him a move to Blackburn Rovers.

Leutwiler, who has been capped by Canada, was back-up to David Raya and later Christian Walton in his three years at Ewood Park, but did make 13 appearances in all competitions, including five in the Championship.

He had a brief spell with Fleetwood Town before going on to join Huddersfield.
