LATICS are sweating on the fitness of goalkeeper Danny Rogers ahead of tonight’s trip to Bristol Rovers.

The summer signing came through Saturday’s game at Bradford City but looked increasingly hampered by a shoulder injury that he sustained in the warm-up.

It was a problem that affected his kicking and movement, and impeded his ability to keep out Lee Angol’s match-winning penalty after diving the right way.

Assistant head coach Colin West was waiting to see how Rogers reacted to treatment before liaising with isolating head coach Keith Curle and naming the squad to face Joey Barton’s side tonight (kick-off 7.45pm).

But with question marks over the availability of fellow newcomer Jayson Leutwiler, and a reluctance to turn to Academy goalkeeper Kacper Danielewicz, who was on the bench at Valley Parade, Latics could be facing a goalkeeping crisis.

Leutwiler was among Curle’s first group of summer signings but missed pre-season because of international duty with Canada and their run to the semi-finals of the Gold Cup.

The former Blackburn Rovers keeper reported back to Boundary Park ahead of the new season, but has yet to be named in a matchday squad, and while he has participated in training the nature of his absence on matchdays - or even future at the club - is unclear.

West, who was also assessing the fitness of latest signing Jamie Hopcutt after he limped off on his debut at Bradford, said: “We’ve got a goalkeeper situation with injury and one of our midfield players Jamie so we’re going to have to see how they’ve come through the physio side of it.”

Curle remains absent for tonight’s game at the Memorial Stadium as he completes his period of isolation having tested positive for coronavirus. But West said the head coach was as involved as possible in the planning and preparation for tonight’s game.

“Keith wants to be back now, which is understandable because that’s the way he is. He just wants to be in and around it,” said West.

“We’re keeping in contact all the time and speaking about how we’re setting things up and how we’re doing things with a team that he obviously picks.

“He’s just desperate to be back but he’s got to do it at the right time for everybody - people at the football club, his family and Keith himself.”

West added: “We’re in a situation where Covid has broken into certain clubs.

“Our manager’s down, our analyst is down and feeding stuff into them is getting done, certainly privately to them, but we’re speaking to all the players in terms of how it went on Saturday, what we can improve on; what they shouldn’t have done, what they’ve been doing great and really enhancing more of it. It’s a case of not dwelling on certain things because players in the lower divisions, and that’s not derogatory to them, mistakes happen. That’s generally why they’re in this division.

“We’ve just got to make fewer mistakes and just focus on the positives.”
