OLDHAM Athletic could make experienced striker Matt Green their first January signing.

The 6ft former Mansfield, Salford and Grimsby forward joined Irish Premiership club Linfield in the summer but has had his contract terminated by mutual consent, with Boundary Park understood to be his next destination.

Latics have been in need of a recognised targetman, more so having started the second half of the season with goalless draws.

But while still operating under a transfer embargo they remain limited to free agents and loans, with Green now falling into that bracket.

The centre forward, who turned 35 yesterday, joined Linfield from Grimsby in August but has been allowed to leave.

Halifax striker Billy Waters was also on the club’s wanted list in the summer.

It is understood then head coach Keith Curle was reluctant to make a move but Latics could revisit their interest this month. However, that would be dependent on the 27-year-old’s contract situation with the National League side.
