JUNIOR Luamba has been ruled out for up to two months with a recurrence of a hamstring injury.

The 18-year-old had started the last two games after coming off the bench to score a later winner in the relegation six-pointer at Scunthorpe United.

But he was forced off through injury in last week’s 3-3 draw at Newport County - where his replacement, Mike Fondop, scored twice.

And head coach John Sheridan revealed the extent of the damage ahead of tomorrow’s visit of Bradford City.

“Junior has got a bad hamstring injury and will be out for six to eight weeks unfortunately,” Sheridan confirmed.

“He’s a young lad who has figured in the last two games. He did really well against Bristol and started all right the other day (at Newport).

“It’s a shame, just when you get a bit of confidence that the manager is putting you in the team.

“But he’s young and hopefully he’ll recover quickly.”

It is a cruel blow for Luamba, who tweeted: "Devastated to have picked up another injury.

"It's one of the hardest things to deal with, mentally, as a player but I believe everything happens for a reason.

"Now it's time to knuckle down and work harder for a bigger and better comeback."

Luamba only recently returned from a lengthy injury after an impressive start to the season following his graduation from the Latics Academy to his first professional deal.

The striker was sidelined for four months after suffering a knee injury and simultaneous hamstring tear in September, soon after scoring his first Football League goal to secure a late win at Sutton United.

Luamba worked tirelessly on his rehabilitation before making his comeback in the 5-5 draw at home to Forest Green Rovers in December.

And he has impressed under Sheridan’s leadership since the club legend returned as head coach last month.

Although it is a setback for the youngster, who signed a one-year pro contract last summer, Sheridan insists he will not be rushed back.

“He’s a young player who wants to do well,” he said.

“When you’re playing in the team and the manager’s picking you that’s all the confidence you need really.

“But hamstring injuries you’ve got to take your time with them and make sure you’re right when you do get back.”

It is likely that Luamba will be replaced by January signing Mike Fondop in the line-up to face Bradford tomorrow, although Hallam Hope is also available after recovering from injury.

Dylan Bahamboula is ruled out after last week’s sending off at Newport.

“Dylan is suspended but everyone else is fit and available,” added Sheridan.
