The Yanks Weekend event which takes place in Saddleworth every year has been cancelled this summer, though some pubs have stepped up to the mark to provide some form of 'wartime' fun.

The hotly anticipated annual event sees a military show and parade march through Uppermill village while locals get dressed up in 1940s gear.

Pubs and restaurants in the village also get in the wartime spirit by changing up their menus and music - and there is usually plenty of live entertainment staged over the course of the weekend as well as a vintage military vehicle parade.

For more than two decades, the event established itself as a favourite in the community's social calendar and attracted audiences from across the country, and although the official event was also cancelled last year, villagers rallied together to make it happen.

However, in a post in the official Yanks Weekend 2023 Facebook post, the organiser said it had been cancelled again this year due to "relocation issues".

Paul Higginson said: "Myself and the team were hoping to stage this year's event.

"But sadly, the event will not take place this year. With relocation issues, that in the long term, will be resolved.

"I would like to thank everyone personally, for your continued support.

"My apologies, that as a team we haven't managed to stage this year's event.

"Myself and the team look forward to seeing you all in 2024", he added.

Still, at least two pubs in the village aren't letting the bad news dampen the mood.

Albion Tap, at number 72 on High Street, and The Hare and Hounds, number 68, announced they will be "doing our own thing" and revealed a Yanks Weekend Extravaganza at its venues this year.

On Saturday, August 12, the pubs said they will provide "all-day entertainment", brought by the host, G.I Gabe.

The afternoon will see music "through the decades" played by DJ Simon Tait while the evening will swing into live music from Danny Maddocks.

Then on Sunday (August 13), the pubs will provide "Yanks Sunday afternoon" with a 'legends session' with Joey Mathews.

The venues said its outside bar, barbeque and prosecco tent will be up and running for the big weekend and entry is free for those who wish to attend.
