A recent video posted on YouTube by Canadian channel Learning Canteen ranked Oldham as the ninth worst town in England to live in.

In the video, the narrator laments the town for lacking a "single tower" and claims one resident said it looked as if "the government had been performing nuclear testing in the area".

The Oldham Times posted an article on this video on Wednesday, October 27 and asked readers on social media whether they thought the ranking was harsh. It it is fair to say that the commenters overwhelmingly agreed with the ranking.

Both Jen Smethurst and Carole Hibbert commented the same thing on Facebook, saying: "Sounds about right."

Suzzanna Bryer and Sam Karasow both stated that Oldham being one of the worst English towns to live in was the truth, with Mr Karasow adding that it is a "depressing town".

Some commenters had humorous responses. Gary Dawson said he "thought it would have been number one". Andy Johnstone said the narrator of the video "probably doesn't know the half of it either".

Other comments came from Tim Boycott, who described Oldham's place on the list as "harsh but true" and from Diane Hilton Wainwright who said it wasn't harsh and described the town as "horrible".

There were some commenters who said Oldham town itself was not to their liking but pointed out that the surrounding area was nice.

Natalie Speakman wrote on Facebook: "No it isn't harsh. The surrounding countryside and some of the parks are nice but the town itself is a complete dump."

Julie McDonagh was also keen to point out there was a difference between the town and other parts of the borough, commenting: "It’s ridiculous to tar every town in Oldham with the same brush, I live in Heyside, Royton and it certainly is not a dump."

Some comments pointed out that the narrator wasn't very well informed and it was unlikely he had ever visited the town.

Overall, there were few comments that defended the town against what the narrator has said. It seems the residents of Oldham strongly agree with Oldham's inclusion on the list.
