A vacant GP surgery has been reopened by the practice in the same facility, which took on thousands of patients earlier this year.

Quayside Medical Practice, based at Failsworth District Centre on Ashton Road West, has expanded by taking the space of a surgery that was shut down.

Failsworth Group Practice had its contract to provide GP services terminated by Oldham Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) in January of this year.

It came after an inspection deemed the practice "inadequate" and it was placed into special measures before it was eventually closed down.

On Friday, June 10, empty space was officially reopened by MP for Ashton and Failsworth, Angela Rayner, with Quayside Medical Practice now operating in both GP spaces in the building.

Dr Mark Wilshere, one of the GPs at the practice, said: "Quayside is working hard to catch up on work left undone by the previous surgery and have been working around the clock to improve access, services and care.

"Our vision is to continue to offer an excellent service to the local population whilst remaining innovative in how we provide care and services."

When Failsworth Group Practice was closed down, patients had to be transferred to other surgeries, with Quayside taking on 12,000 of the patients after they were given the choice of which surgery to sign up to.

Despite the national shortages of practice nurses and GPs, the practice has increased the number of appointments available and has been able to manage with the significant rise in patients.

The surgery is looking to continue to streamline administrative processes while staff look to expand their roles to offer more services.

Quayside, which is run by Dr Wilshere and Dr Marc Crutchley, recently developed a new website and modified its GP booking system to try and make it easier for patients to access services.

Dr Wilshere thanked Ms Rayner for her "kind words of encouragement and feedback" and all patients, both old and new, for their understanding of the changes the practice has been undergoing.
