A Saddleworth greengrocers will have its ‘last day’ later this month.

Weaver & Wilde Groceries & Provisions, which opened to much fanfare in June 2022, will be closing after just more than a year in operation.

The shop now has 30 per cent off most of its ambient food lines ahead of the closure on Saturday, September 16 at 3pm.

Run by Cal and Thomas Rowson-Codd, the shop was launched by the duo after the closure of Greenfield's former greengrocer in August 2020.

However, according to the owners, Cal ‘fell ill’, leading in part to the snap decision to close.

On Facebook, the shop posted: “Even a week ago we thought we could deliver both sites. But in reality, something has to give at this moment in time for Cal’s health.”

Speaking to The Oldham Times in April 2022, before the shop’s grand opening, Cal said: “We live in Greenfield and people are missing having that amenity on their doorstep.

“The only alternative is either coming into Uppermill or going into Tesco.

“Supermarket produce ain’t great, it’s been in the supply chain for a while.

“It’s not necessarily the most environmentally friendly and the price paid to the farmer isn’t necessarily particularly favourable.

“And I just don’t like Tesco!”

Now, Greenfield shoppers will have to make alternative arrangements.

In a post on Facebook, Weaver & Wilde referenced the expansion of its Uppermill coffee house location, a long wet summer as other reasons behind the closure.

The shop goes on to say that they ‘will be back’ in a ‘very different location’. The post adds: “Thank you to everyone who has supported us.

“We're sorry it hasn't been a longer love affair, but for now something has got to give.”

Bread and muffins are set to remain on offer in the shop every day until it closes, with bread then available from the Uppermill coffee shop location after closure.

Customers shared their sadness on Facebook.

Sarah Shard commented: “Awww you created something so unique in that space and I am grateful for the different varieties of wonderful fresh veggies I got to try!

“I moved away to Yorkshire Dales earlier in the year so no longer visit that way but I wish you both the best in doing what ever feels right for you!”

Sally Isaac added: “Really loved to shop there and the fact that you had nice and unusual stuff which you delivered was a real bonus for me.

“See you soon, but looking after your health is the most important thing xxxx.”
