Oldham’s Christmas lights switch-on has been confirmed, despite some other councils cancelling their switch-ons.

Cost pressures have meant Bolton Council has already cancelled its traditional Christmas light switch-on, which last took place before Covid, in 2019.

Further afield, Bournemouth’s switch-on was cancelled for cost reasons, before the town’s Business Improvement District stepped in with its own plans.

Medway Council in Kent has cancelled its Christmas lights for cost reasons too, as the council faces potential bankruptcy.

Last year, Oldham’s Christmas lights switch on cost £60,286, according to data released in response to a Freedom of Information Act – or about 25p per person, adult and child, living in the borough.

The event saw the town lit up in style outside the Old Town Hall, with a firework finale.

2023 switch-on schedule

This year’s event is due to take place on Saturday, November 18.

According to Oldham Council, the event will start with a parade at noon, followed by bands playing until the big switch-on at 5.30pm. More details about the event will be released nearer the time.

The event will take place just over two weeks after the Big Bang Bonfire, set to return for its 11th year on November 2.

Bonfires and fireworks around the country have also been affected by cancellations.

Manchester City Council has decided not to hold an event this year, and has said the events will not be reinstated following a review.

Nottingham Council, Norwich City Council, and Glasgow City Council have also cut fireworks events.
