The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind on Christmas Eve (Sunday, December 24).

While the warning does not cover Oldham proper, nearby towns such as Marsden, Glossop, and Slaithwaite are affected on a day when many will be travelling further afield to visit families.

The warning covers much of the North East and East Midlands, stretching north beyond Newcastle and south beyond Nottingham.

Elsewhere, Scotland will see a yellow warning for wind, while much of Wales will be subject to a yellow warning for rain.

The weather agency has warned that travel could be disrupted, with longer journey times or cancellations to be anticipated.

According to the Met Office, Marsden will see gusts of up to 43mph on Christmas Eve.

In Uppermill, the weather agency forecasts gusts reaching 41mph on the day. In Oldham town centre, the day, which is expected to be rainy, will see wind gusts of up to 40mph.

Temperatures in Oldham will reach 11C on Christmas Eve, going down to highs of 8C on Christmas Day (Monday, December 25).

The warning comes just days after windy weather bringing ‘danger to life’ hit Oldham, with gales reaching speeds of up to 60mph.

As part of the weather alert, the Met Office has warned those in the affected areas:

  • There is a slight chance of some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, and some branches and trees may be damaged or brought down.
  • There is a chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage.
  • There is a chance of longer journey times or cancellations as road, rail, air and ferry services are affected, while a few roads and bridges could close.
  • There is a small chance of injuries due to flying debris.
