A section of a main road which connects to Oldham town centre will be closed for days this week as work is carried out.

Oldham Way will be shut for drivers on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (21, 22 and 23 February) this week as "resurfacing work" is being carried out.

The closure applies to the stretch of road between the Manchester Street roundabout up to the junction of Price Street/Oldham Way, towards the Mumps Metrolink stop.

The road will only be closed from 8pm until 5am and signposted diversions will be in place.

However, some residents weren't happy about the news and reacted to the Oldham Council's notice about the closure on social media calling it "a joke".

A woman wrote: "Couldn't make this up. Why has this not been done months ago?"

While another added: "How many times has Oldham Way been resurfaced? Or is it re re re re re re re surfaced?"

A third man said: "I speak on behalf of every resident and general road user who has had the misfortunate of using Oldham Way for the last 12 months, especially in rush hour, that you have failed us all.

"I cannot even begin to imagine the anxiety and strained mental health some people have suffered as a result of this absolutely shambolic project management."

The news comes as residents across the borough blasted 'nightmare' traffic jams caused by temporary lights for construction work last month.

Official notices mapped out 60 different roadworks in January, which included 28 temporary lights and 25 roads that were narrowed to single-file.

Residents said the system caused a pile-up of traffic of up to two hours on a Friday night.

A further 40 different roadworks have been planned for February, including temporary traffic lights for 19 different works and single-file roads for another 18.
